Background of The Network
The Greater Horn of Africa presently faces many serious challenges to sustainable peace, development and the elimination of poverty. The vast majority struggles to meet even the most basic needs, while the region itself is rich in natural resources and potential. The factors contributing to this dire situation are many and complex and they include insecurity, bad governance, poverty, human rights violations, conflict, war trauma, intolerance and negative ethnicity.
The role of civil society, community-based organisations, traditional institutions and other non-state actors cannot be underestimated in the struggle for peace, reconciliation and human dignity in the Greater Horn of Africa. Pax Christi, as an international movement for peace and justice, is committed to assisting civil society actors in the region to be actively involved in building peace in all its dimensions. It recognises that building lasting peace in each country is an essential precondition for eradicating poverty and for promoting stability and economic, political and cultural development of the region. It is against this background that the Pax Christi Greater Horn of Africa Network was formed in 2006.
